The commitment also prioritizes low emission development to support the government's program to achieve net-zero carbon by 2060.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN), a gas sub-holding of state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina, has said it believes its three strategic projects will help reduce carbon emissions by up to five million tons per year.

The three projects cover power plant regasification, refinery gasification, and household gas networks.

PT PGN is committed to expanding gas infrastructures and strengthening gas supplies as sustainable transitional energy, PGN sales and operations director Faris Azis said in a written statement released in Jakarta on Friday.

"The commitment also prioritizes low emission development to support the government's program to achieve net-zero carbon by 2060," he said.

PT PGN officially became a gas sub-holding after it acquired PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina in 2018.

"The three projects will be able to curb CO2 emissions by five million tons per year," Azis said.

The projects will accelerate the energy transition from fossil fuels to clean gas energy, he added.

The power plant regasification projects will mostly be realized in the eastern part of Indonesia, he said.

Based on Decree No. 2/2022 of the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, the power plant regasification projects will be built at 33 sites. They will have a combined capacity of 1,198 MW and consume 83.74 billion British thermal units of gas per day (BBTUD).

"Through the regasification, which converts the use of fuel oils and coal to gas for power plants, PGN is upbeat about achieving net-zero emissions. If the regasification can entirely be realized, it will curb CO2 emissions by 650 thousand tons per year," he informed.

The refinery gasification projects will be implemented in Dumai, Plaju, Balongan, Cilacap, TPPI, Tuban, and Balikpapan, he said.

"May we be able to realize the projects that will have multi-benefits. For instance, gas as clean energy can replace fossil fuels. With a total of 560 BBUTD, refinery gasification can reduce CO2 emissions by 4.3 million (tons) per year," he added.

The third project covers the use of gas by households. PGN has provided 750 thousand household gas connections in 67 cities and districts in 17 provinces so far, which can be accessed round the clock.
