Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) drew attention to several steps for the promotion and enforcement of human rights in Indonesia during a meeting with the European Union (EU).

"The institutions discussed the promotion and enforcement of human rights in Indonesia, including Komnas HAM's initiative to hold a peace dialog on Papua," Komnas HAM Chief Ahmad Taufan Damanik noted in a written statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

Damanik made the remarks during a meeting with the EU special envoy for human rights Eamon Gilmore at the EU Foreign Affairs Office in Brussels, Belgium.

At the meeting, Damanik specially highlighted the steps that Komnas HAM has taken and its plan to hold a peace dialog on Papua.

In addition, the rights body highlighted various fundamental developments related to the situation of human rights in Indonesia, including the settlement of several cases that had been under the spotlight and the challenges that may lie ahead.

"Komnas HAM will continue to work intensively to receive wide support for the initiative and get the peace dialog realized soon," he affirmed.

Meanwhile, Gilmore lauded Komnas HAM's steps, particularly its initiative to hold the peace dialog on Papua.

He also lauded the positive developments pertaining to human rights in Indonesia. In principle, the EU respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Indonesia.
