KAI does not tolerate it (sexual harassment) and hopes that such incidents would not take place again in various other KAI services
Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned railway firm PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will blacklist passengers, who have sexually harassed other travelers during train journeys, from using its train services.

Executive Vice President Corporate Secretary of KAI Asdo Artriviyanto stated that the policy was implemented to serve as a deterrent effect and prevent perpetrators from repeating their acts in future.

"KAI does not tolerate it (sexual harassment) and hopes that such incidents would not take place again in various other KAI services," he noted in a statement here on Tuesday.

Artriviyanto said the blacklisting was a firm action taken by KAI to prevent sexual harassment on trains. The policy also applies to the perpetrator of sexual harassment whose case recently went viral on social media.

He affirmed that the KAI has personally contacted the victim and expressed its apology for the inconvenience experienced by the victim. KAI is ready to provide support to the victim in taking legal action.

"The victim did not intend to take this case to court and only urged the perpetrator to apologize and promise not to repeat his action again," he remarked.

Based on the video evidence and report, KAI will blacklist the perpetrator's ID number (NIK), so that it cannot be used to avail KAI's services.

KAI officers will continuously draw attention to the importance of maintaining politeness towards fellow passengers, the consequences of acts of sexual harassment, as well as reminding to promptly report behaviors that make passengers uncomfortable.

KAI will also strengthen its monitoring and security to prevent people from committing sexual harassment.

"Hopefully, various steps that KAI takes would provide a sense of security and comfort to passengers while using KAI's services," he remarked.

Head of the Advocacy and Community Affairs Division of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) Djoko Setijowarno noted that his side supports KAI that will blacklist perpetrators through ID numbers to have a deterrent effect on the perpetrators of sexual violence on public transportation.

KAI is also expected to coordinate with the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registry (Dukcapil), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan).
