"Government Regulation Number 21 shows that the government remains committed to (improving) the system of protection and legal certainty for the people and the Indonesian diaspora abroad," Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly noted in a written statement received here on Monday.
Minister Laoly delivered the statement during a meeting between the people and the Indonesian diaspora at the Consular Discussion Forum in San Francisco, the United States.
The activity, which was initiated by the Indonesian Consulate General in San Francisco in collaboration with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, specifically discussed the latest developments regarding regulations, Indonesian policies on citizenship, and immigration.
He accentuated that the regulation was imposed as a form of the government's attention, especially in providing citizenship protection to children of marriages between Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals.

President Jokowi recently ratified Government Regulation No. 21 of 2022 that sets the requirements and the process for obtaining Indonesian citizenship for children of mixed marriages.
This is especially for children from mixed marriages that did not get dual citizenship through Article 41 of Law Number 12 of 2006 on Citizenship.
The regulation, which was ratified since May 31, 2022, allows children to acquire Indonesian citizenship through an application submitted to the president through the ministry.
Government Regulation Number 21 is an amendment to Government Regulation Number 2 of 2007 about Gaining, Losing, Canceling, and Regaining Indonesian Citizenship.
The change was a legal breakthrough to respond to the latest developments related to citizenship, including solution for children facing the citizenship issue due to their parents' mixed marriage status.
