There have been five candidates for the (RRB) nomination, hopefully, we (Indonesia) can succeed (to become selected).
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Communication and Informatics Ministry held a diplomatic banquet titled "Jakarta Reception Days" to gather other countries' support for its nomination to become a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2023-2026.

"We need to collaborate with (other) ITU members, so Indonesia can be selected again to represent the Region E of Asia and Australasia at the ITU Council," Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate stated here on Tuesday night.

In addition to seeking support for a position at the ITU Council, the diplomatic banquet is aimed at garnering support for the candidacy of an Indonesian representative, Meiditomo Sutyarjoko, to become a member of the Radio Regulation Board (RRB) of the ITU.

The minister noted that if Indonesia is elected as a member of the ITU Council for the 2023-2026 period, his side will strive for the realization of a human-centric digital technology development, as the attempt aligns with Indonesia's vision to become a digital-savvy country and to pursue optimal digital transformation.

In addition to representing the Asian and Australasian countries at the ITU Council, Indonesia can represent developing and undeveloped countries in discussing the issues of radio rights management, including fairer use of spectrum and satellites.

Meanwhile, the nomination of Indonesian representative at the RRB also holds a strategic value, as the board is tasked with solving all spectrum problems around the world.

"The number (of RRB representatives) for Region E is limited, as there will be only three (representatives). There have been five candidates for the (RRB) nomination. Hopefully, we (Indonesia) can succeed (to become selected)," Sutyarjoko stated.

Furthermore, Plate noted that the representatives of partner countries, who were also members of the ITU, had given a positive response to Indonesia's candidacy to become the member of the ITU Council and the RRB.

He expected that the support from ambassadors and representatives of partner countries can be reflected in the policies issued by their countries on account of the fact that Indonesia also offers reciprocal cooperation.

Indonesia has been a member of the ITU since 1949.

Election for the members and other important positions for the ITU Council will be conducted at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 in Bucharest, Romania, from September 26 to October 14, 2022.
