South Sumatra (ANTARA) - The Palembang City Police, South Sumatra, have questioned three people as witnesses in connection with the collapse of a school building on Friday (July 1, 2022) that left one person dead and another injured.



"Three people have been questioned as witnesses. They saw the collapse of the building on Friday evening," Chief of the Palembang City Police, Senior Commissioner Mokhamad Ngajib informed on Friday.



He assured that the police will thoroughly investigate the collapse of the three-story building, which was under construction.

"We will investigate it thoroughly. We will question the school management and the building contractor. So, we cannot yet establish the exact cause of the building collapse. (The investigation will determine) whether it involved a criminal offense," he said.



Earlier, chief of Sako Police Precinct, Commissioner Evial Kalza, had said that Agus Nuzlan, a 42-year-old construction worker, had died after building material fell on him at 5.45 p.m. local time on Friday.

"The deceased was later taken by a joint team of personnel to M. Hasan Police Hospital in Palembang for an autopsy," he added.



Another construction worker, identified by his initials as RR, who was injured in the incident is currently receiving treatment at Moh Hoesin Hospital in Palembang.



Based on a preliminary investigation conducted by the sub-district office and the city public works and public housing office, no building construction permit (IMB) was obtained for the building, Sako sub-district head Amirudin Sandy said.



"After we checked it, the three-story building is not equipped with IMB," he said.
