Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Deputy Head Lili Pintauli Siregar opened a workshop on public participation and anti-corruption education during the first day of the second Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) meeting here on Tuesday.

Delegations from nine countries participated live as well as 10 countries and one entity, European Union, that participated virtually in the workshop divided into two sessions.

As quoted from the G20 website, ACWG is part of the G20 working group that seeks to set minimum common standards between legal systems of the G20 countries, as a means to prevent and combat corruption.

G20 is an international forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union that work together to handle major issues. Indonesia is holding the presidency of the grouping this year.

"Today's workshop focuses on discussing two issues. We will discuss approaches and initiatives that have been implemented in improving public participation within the anti-corruption program," Siregar noted in her remarks.

"Secondly, this meeting will serve as a platform to share experience between countries to develop the culture of integrity in formal and non-formal education," she remarked.

According to Siregar, the effort to eradicate corruption cannot be singlehandedly made by a single institution or country, as the crime tends to be transnational in nature that involves other countries and parties.

To this end, public participation, starting from civil society organizations, academicians, entrepreneurs, youngsters, and other non-governmental organizations, became important in supporting corruption eradication and prevention, she noted.

Public participation and anti-corruption education are two aspects that are related to one another, as the anti-corruption campaign and education necessitates the people's active support and participation, she explained.

One of the negative impacts of corruption is that it affects implementation of the sustainable development agenda that is targeted to be realized by 2030, Siregar stated.

Corruption became one of the economic challenges that G20 member countries encounter, she remarked.

To this end, the KPK, which represents Indonesia in leading the ACWG forum, highlighted the importance of public participation and anti-corruption education as priority issues.

These issues had been introduced to G20 delegations ever since the first ACGW meeting in Jakarta and received support from the entire G20 delegations.

As for the second ACWG meeting held on July 5-8, 2022, discussion on public participation and anti-corruption education will be summarized into a compendium of good practices and experiences from G20 members.
