This includes (methods) to develop the structure of industry that has resilience against natural disasters, geopolitical (issues), or even the development of technology
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has said that the implementation of structural reforms in Indonesia is an ongoing task, much like homework.

"This includes (methods) to develop the structure of industry that has resilience against natural disasters, geopolitical (issues), or even the development of technology," the minister expounded during an orientation held for new students of the University of Indonesia (UI), on Monday.

Some of the structural reform agenda has been pursued through changes in the law and regulations, but it must be made certain that those changes are implemented, she observed.

Structural reforms are necessary to help the nation adjust to many changes, such as adopting a new lifestyle after the COVID-19 pandemic, climate changes, and geopolitical conflicts that have impacted the supply chain, trade, and global investment.

"Many agendas on structural (reforms), such as productivity improvement through the development of the workforce market, infrastructure, logistics, and (understanding of the) financial sector, have become very important," she informed.

Currently, Indonesia is one of the 190 members of the United Nations who are facing the issue of the war in Ukraine and rising tensions between China and Taiwan, Indrawati pointed out.

Given the geopolitical issues, every country is expected to review its relations with other countries.

"Most likely protectionism would increase, even get (intense). Investment and trade relations would no more be based on the flow of goods, capital, and free humans," she said.

Countries all over the world are also facing climate change, which could increase the rate of destruction due to natural disasters, thus making structural reform an urgent need.

"These need to be anticipated by Indonesia as an archipelagic country. Thousands of Indonesia's islands could be in danger if the global temperature changes and the sea level rises," the minister added.
