The GEI was developed due to the lack of clear tools to measure the green economic transformation efforts in Indonesia, the Ministry and Agency's Environment Director, Medrilzam, noted.
During the online Media Briefing G20: Measuring The Progress of Low Carbon and Green Economy on Tuesday, he noted that the topic of green economy was widely discussed.
However, Medrilzam pointed to the lack of clarity regarding the green economy and ways to measure it. Thus, the agency has striven to create a measuring tool called GEI, he added.
GEI will be beneficial to measure the effectiveness of green economic transformation in a tangible, representative, and accurate manner, he remarked.

The GEI can be used to evaluate social, economic, and environmental interactions within the scope of the green economy while also identifying the potential risks and opportunities in designing better green economic policies.
The GEI comprises 15 chosen indicators that represent the three pillars of sustainable development: economy, social, and environment.
These 15 chosen indicators include the average length of stay in school, life expectancy, poverty rate, and open unemployment rate within the social category.
Meanwhile, the environment indicators comprise the percentage of land cover area from Indonesia's land area, new and renewable energy mix from primary energy sources, and percentage of managed waste.
The environment indicators in GEI also include the percentage of cumulative emission reduction from the baseline as well as a decline in peatland cover.
In addition, the economic category indicators within GEI concern productivity of the service sector manpower, productivity of industry sector manpower, productivity of agriculture, gross national income per capita, final energy intensity, and emission intensity.
