Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Informatics Minister (Menkominfo) Johnny G. Plate urged the people to maintain national digital sovereignty during Indonesia's 77th Independence Day (HUT RI) celebrations.

National digital sovereignty should be maintained to prevent the creation of new colonization from a certain party that can harm the people in the country, he noted through his press statement on Wednesday.

The minister noted that a digital colony cannot be created, given that digital space is extraterritorial and data that moves within it passes through the national border.

This action should be taken as an effort to bolster and maintain Indonesia's independence for which many national fighters and heroes had fought for in addition to helping the future generation.

According to Plate, digital and data sovereignty became important, so that mobilization of value and data flow, both nationally and globally, can be managed well.

"Utilization of digital space should refer to and align with the national regulation and law," he noted.

In the current era of technological disruption, digital sovereignty becomes an important aspect that should be fought for, he emphasized.

The minister added that regulation for electronic service providers (PSE) becomes one of the approaches to protect Indonesians in the digital space and is part of the efforts to maintain digital sovereignty.

By necessitating PSEs to register their businesses following Kominfo Minister Regulation No. 5 of 2020, the people can gain certainty that these PSEs comply with the regulation and can utilize the digital space as per their requirement.

"Our digital space can develop well and the people's rights can be protected if there is a problem in transactions in the digital space," he stated.

In addition, Plate urged people across the country to maintain safety and order of the digital space through positive and productive contents.

This encouragement is expected to reduce negative contents that can destroy unity and ruin the national digital sovereignty.

The people cannot allow room for illegal actions in the digital space, such as radicalism, terrorism, narcotics trade, online gambling, online pornography, as well as illegal trades and services, he remarked.

With this, Indonesia will not just become independent in the physical space but also in the digital space.
