Jakarta (ANTARA) - West Jakarta Police have seized 44 kg of crystal methamphetamine smuggled into Indonesia from Myanmar via Malaysia.

"This is a methamphetamine trafficking network from Myanmar (that involved the smuggling of drugs) via Malaysia into Pekanbaru and (later, the drugs were sent) to Jakarta," West Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Pasma Royce said here on Friday.

The West Jakarta Police managed to thwart the drug trafficking bid after receiving a tip from the public. Based on the tip, the police monitored AM (28), an illicit drug courier.

The police arrested AM in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, on August 2, 2022, and seized around 44 kg of methamphetamine wrapped in tea bags.

"We have seized methamphetamine weighing a total of 44,074 grams or 44 kilograms wrapped in tea packages," he said.

AM told the police that the drugs were from Myanmar and were sent to Malaysia and later smuggled into a small port in Pekanbaru area, Indonesia.

"From Pekanbaru, the methamphetamine was to be sent to Jakarta by AM," he said.

AM received Rp10 million as payment for delivering the drugs to Jakarta from Pekanbaru.

The police are still investigating who was supposed to receive the drugs in Jakarta.
