Jakarta (ANTARA) - Several archaeological findings have been unearthed during the construction of the second phase of the Jakarta MRT connecting the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout in Central Jakarta to the Jakarta Kota Station in West Jakarta.

"We have conducted various checks, and we have unearthed numerous cultural heritage objects (during the construction process)," PT Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta's director of construction, Silvia Halim, informed here on Tuesday.

Halim said that the company is committed to rescuing archaeological assets before continuing underground excavation for the MRT railway track tunnel and stations.

The archaeological findings unearthed during the construction include the Glodok old bridge, which was discovered in December 2021, and the Batavia terracotta waterway, which was unearthed in July 2022, she pointed out.

The findings will be preserved and could be exhibited in museums or underground MRT stations or integrated into the station design and architecture, she noted.

The company will also tweak the railway’s course slightly to prevent damage to a part of the Batavia old city gate known as Pintu Besar, she added.

Jakarta MRT Phase 2, which consists of three packages, CP 201, CP 202, and CP 203, is projected to be finished in 2028.

On September 10, 2022, the government held the groundbreaking of CP (contract package) 202 of Jakarta MRT in Jakarta Old Town, West Jakarta.



CP 202, signed on July 18, will connect the 1.8-kilometer (km) Harmoni-Sawah Besar regions and include three underground stations. CP 202 is a part of the Jakarta MRT’s Phase 2 construction.



Meanwhile, work on the CP 201 package that connects Thamrin-Monas, stretching 2.26 km, with two underground stations, is 42.7-percent complete. In addition, the CP 203 package that connects the 1.3-km Glodok-Kota stretch, with two underground stations, is 15 percent complete.
