Depok, West Java (ANTARA) - The Depok City Government, West Java, continues to make improvements in the city by building disability-friendly sidewalks.

"Pedestrian lanes or sidewalks on Kartini Street, which are currently under construction, will be equipped with guiding blocks or directions for persons with disabilities. This is built, so that all road users feel comfortable," Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris stated here on Monday.

Idris explained that the guiding blocks, which serve as walking signs for the visually impaired, are colored in yellow and have embossed textures.

He emphasized that sidewalks are the right of all pedestrians, including persons with disabilities.

"I urge the Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR) to meet the standards in installing guiding blocks on the sidewalks of Kartini Street, so that the path (remains) uninterrupted, neat, does not hit poles or trees, and the paint does not peel off easily," he explained.

In addition, the mayor said, the sidewalks on Kartini Street will also have wheelchair ramps for wheelchair users while going up and down the sidewalk. Moreover, the width of the sidewalk also varies.

"It starts from one to 1.5 meters, with a length of 1.5 kilometers and a height of about 15 cm above the road," Idris stated.

Head of Depok PUPR, Citra Indah Yulianty, remarked that the construction of disability-friendly sidewalks is designed with special textures, so that people with special needs can direct their way and there is no dangerous elevation.

Yulianty revealed that the pattern of sidewalks on Kartini Street will emulate that of Margonda Street, where the texture is made to resemble orange skin, with the "hotmix" asphalt paving method.

The budget for upgrading Kartini Street was assisted by the West Java provincial government, and the construction work began with the installation of a water channel of 60 x 80 square centimeters, she added.
