Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of people recovering from COVID-19 increased by 1,408 as of 12 p.m. local time on Wednesday, the COVID-19 task force reported.

Data received from the task force in Jakarta on Wednesday showed that with the additional recoveries, the total number of recoveries recorded since March 2020 reached 6,285,790.

Jakarta province recorded the most recoveries at 537, followed by East Java (227), West Java (162), Banten (111), and Central Java (88), the task force informed.

Meanwhile, the number of daily COVID-19 cases reached 2,390 on Wednesday. The provinces that contributed the most to the case count were Jakarta (891), West Java (343), East Java (293), Banten (209), and Central Java (168).

The additional cases took the total number of confirmed cases recorded since March 2020 to 6,462,655.

Meanwhile, 16 additional deaths were recorded on Wednesday: 6 from Central Java province; 3 from East Java; 2 from Jakarta; and 1 each from Yogyakarta, North Sumatra, North Sulawesi, Aceh, and Riau Islands.

The COVID-19 task force further reported that the number of active cases on Wednesday, which included patients who were still undergoing treatment and self-isolation, stood at 18,504, an increase of 966 compared to the previous day.

In addition, 4,436 people were included in the suspect category.

The results were obtained following the testing of 68,453 specimens obtained from 32,109 people at hundreds of laboratories across Indonesia on Wednesday.

The positivity rate for daily specimens was 6.02 percent and the daily positivity rate for people was 7.44 percent.

An epidemiologist from Griffith University Australia, Dicky Budiman, said that with the decline in COVID-19 cases and the potential for an end to the pandemic, it is necessary to raise public awareness about the importance of following a healthy lifestyle in order to face the threat of other diseases that could put public health at risk.

"What is still a big task for the government is to increase literacy with risk communication, that we must start promoting literacy on healthy lifestyle," he added.

He reminded that besides COVID-19, there are still threats to public health that are very much real and which might strike at any time.
