Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) urged the private sector to invest more in the space sector through public-private partnership to receive economic benefits and develop Indonesia's space sector.

"This is because the government has already funded remote sensing for mapping," Head of BRIN's Aviation and Space Research Organization Robertus Heru Triharjanto noted during the Space20 press conference here Thursday.

"We seek to invite the private sector to participate by providing insights that remote sensing has already entered the private territory," he remarked.

Investors in the space sector not only come from within the country but can also come from regional and international levels, he said.

"Space technology is no longer the domain of a country but also the domain of the private sector, since its impact no longer just affects defense and security but also the economy," he explained.

One of the benefits that the private sector players are interested in includes the tracking of their assets, such as the latest information on the position of their delivered goods that can be monitored through satellite.

Majority of the funding for space activities in Indonesia for remote sensing still comes from the state thus far, Triharjanto stated.

This is because space technology is mostly used for public services, such as prediction of hotspots to prevent forest and land fires, harvest prediction, and weather monitoring.

In future, the result of remote sensing can be processed further, as the data analysis result with added value can meet the stakeholders' demand, especially the private sector.

This incentivizes the private sector to invest more in the space sector.

In addition, Indonesia opens up the opportunity for collaboration with various parties to be able to develop and optimize the use of space as well as encourages stronger partnership between developing and developed countries.

"We provide opportunities in how the industry sector invests in Indonesia," he remarked.

He expects that Indonesia can be a player in the space technology field.

To this end, Indonesia will improve its mastery over space technology to boost the people's economy, such as to explore the oceans and their potential more effectively.
