Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) is striving to finalize the construction plan for a new international electric car racing circuit that would be established in Indonesia’s future capital city (IKN) Nusantara, East Kalimantan Province.

Chairperson of IMI Bambang Soesatyo said in a statement on Friday that the new circuit was expected to become one of the automotive sports tourism destinations that would provide a multiplier effect for the economy of the surrounding community.

At a meeting with Head of the IKN Authority Bambang Susantono, he noted that construction of the circuit also aimed at supporting President Joko Widodo’s policy to encourage the use of battery-based electric vehicles.

"IMI continues to finalize the plan to build the circuit with the IKN Authority," the IMI chairperson, who concurrently served as speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), stated.

The sporting facility is planned to be built on an area of 100 hectares and funded by various domestic and foreign investors, so it will not use any of the state budget, he remarked.

Soesatyo expects the international circuit in IKN Nusantara to be able to host the international Formula E racing event in 2025.

Furthermore, Soesatyo has supported the plan to build cable cars as an alternative transportation mode at IKN Nusantara, whose development is based on the concepts of green environment, green energy, and smart transportation.

"The cable car is a smart vehicle that can be an alternative (mode of transportation) in the IKN area. This mode of transportation is suitable for medium- and long-distance transportation in areas with hilly and swamp landscape, such as Kalimantan," he added.
