Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno has said that he expects the G20 Summit in Bali to stir up interest in the use of electric vehicles in Indonesia.

"The discussion (regarding EV adoption) will be intense, and the G20 is expected to be the trigger to that (effort)," he remarked when met in Jakarta on Thursday.

The upcoming G20 Summit in Bali will be an opportunity for Indonesia to show the world that it is ready to adopt electric vehicles and new energy.

Some time ago, the State Secretariat Ministry collaborated with several car companies to secure 962 units of electric cars for use as official vehicles at the G20 Summit in Bali on November 15 and 16, 2022.

Uno further said that the government is trying to establish several charging stations for electric vehicles during the event.

“So, we will complete several electric charging sites for use during the G20, both for motorbikes and cars. This (EVs) will be the main mode of transportation during the G20," he reiterated.

The minister said he expects that these efforts will not cease once the G20 event is over, but will be pursued consistently across Indonesia.

"After that, it is expected that (the adoption of electric vehicles) will continue, so it does not stop at the G20, but also continues, and the hope is that it will be expanded to super-priority tourist destinations, those being Lake Toba, Borobudur, Labuan Bajo, Mandalika, and Likupang," Uno elaborated.

The transition to cleaner energy has been one of the focuses of discussions during the Indonesian G20 Presidency.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s website, the Indonesian Presidency is pushing the energy transition toward new and renewable energy by prioritizing energy security, accessibility, and affordability.

This is being done to ensure a sustainable and green future and address climate change.
