"Indonesia became the center of world attention during the G20 Summit," he noted here on Friday.
He made the statement in response to several parties who have deemed Russia's absence at the Bali Summit on November 15–16, 2022, as a failure on part of Indonesia in its role as the G20 President.
"I actually think that Indonesia has successfully carried out the role of the G20 Presidency. This is based on Indonesia's success in carrying out its traditional role as a middle power and as a non-aligned country," he said.
Indonesia emphasized its impartiality towards the eastern and western blocs, Trihartono added.
"From the start, the G20 was not designed as a security organization to resolve armed conflicts. The focus of the G20 is to discuss and resolve economic and social aspects," he said.
Moreover, the countries of the grouping account for 75 percent of global trade and 80 percent of the world's gross domestic product (GDP).
Therefore, the 2022 G20 Summit was important given that it was joined by most of its member countries, except Russia
Many G20 leaders also used the summit as a venue for bilateral meetings, for example, the leaders of the United States and China, two major countries that have great influence in the world today, Trihartono pointed out.
"The mechanism for resolving the Russia-Ukraine war should be with the United Nations Security Council, and not the G20," he said.
He acknowledged there were those who felt that at the macro level, the G20 Summit was not maximized because some heads of state were not present at the summit.
However, Indonesia demonstrated its ability to hold the summit, which resulted in a joint communiqué containing five important points that were achieved through tough negotiations, he added.
"In fact, initially there were those who were pessimistic that there would be a joint communiqué at the G20 Summit in Bali, and even the G20 Summit sanctions could be carried out," he said.
The summit meeting also served to show the world that Indonesia is one of the global actors that must be reckoned with on the international stage, he added.
Indonesia also showed its sociocultural richness and heterogeneity, he said.
"The G20 Summit is a demonstration of Indonesia's soft power capabilities to the international community. Indonesia which is a middle power and continues to grow," he added.
