Today, the South Sulawesi Regional Committee of Islamic Economy and Finance has been established. I also wish to commend the planned conversion of Sulselbar BPD as Sulselbar Sharia Bank.
Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin on Saturday reiterated the government's commitment to advancing the Islamic economy through the National Committee of Islamic Economics and Finance (KNEKS) by supporting the conversion of conventional banks to Islamic banks.

Amin, as the executive head of the national committee, also commended the planned conversion of Makassar-based Sulselbar Regional Development Bank (BPD) into an Islamic bank to encourage the growth of Islamic financial institutions in provinces.

"Today, the South Sulawesi Regional Committee of Islamic Economy and Finance has been established. I also wish to commend the planned conversion of Sulselbar BPD as Sulselbar Sharia Bank," the vice president said at a gathering of the academic community at the Muslim University of Indonesia (UMI) here on Saturday.

He expressed the hope that the Sulselbar BPD would become a universal Islamic bank after its conversion.

"South Sulawesi Islamic economy and finance potentials (would be bolstered) by the conversion of Sulselbar BPD as Sulselbar Sharia Bank," he said.

Meanwhile, Sulselbar BPD's acting president director, Yulis Suandi, affirmed that the process of transforming the bank into an Islamic bank is on.

"Praise be to God that on July 2022, we convened an extraordinary stakeholder meeting with stakeholders. South Sulawesi and West Sulawesi governors, as well as mayors and district heads, approved the planned conversion," Suandi informed.

He said that while the bank’s executives are coordinating with consultants to expedite the conversion, support from various parties for the process would further encourage them to exert their efforts.

"We hope that support from the vice president and all stakeholders who have signed their approval will encourage us to exert more efforts. (The converted bank) will be a universal Islamic bank that covers all and respects local wisdom," he added.

Suandi expressed the hope that Islamic banks will serve as a counterbalance for conventional banks and would collaborate with them to support the national economy by prioritizing local wisdom and accommodating national interests.
