Jakarta (ANTARA) - No aftershocks were reported following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Garut, West Java, as of 5:20 p.m. local time (UTC +7) on Saturday, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

"As of 5:20 p.m. local time, BMKG monitoring did not detect any aftershock activity," head of the BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono informed in a statement released here on Saturday.

He said that the epicenter of the quake, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, was located west of the Mekarmukti region of Garut at a depth of 109 kilometers.

The moderate earthquake was caused by activities in the Indo-Australia tectonic plate, he informed, adding that an analysis of the earthquake indicated a strike-slip tectonic movement.

Daryono urged residents to remain calm and not trust any unverified information while maintaining vigilance against possible aftershocks.

He also asked residents to avoid entering buildings that were cracked or damaged in the quake and ensure that there was no damage to buildings that could compromise their structural integrity before re-entering the structures.

Meanwhile, the West Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) confirmed that tremors from the earthquake were also felt in other regions of West Java.

"The Garut earthquake was felt in Pangandaran, Tasikmalaya, Banjar, and Ciamis," West Java BPBD's Disaster Mitigation Operation Control Center coordinator, Hadi Rahmat, said.

The provincial BPBD is coordinating with the Garut district BPBD and BPBDs in other regions on reporting the occurrence of the earthquake, he added.

The provincial BPBD has also started to collect essential data on the earthquake, such as structural damage, he added.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake, which was earlier reported to measure 6.4 in magnitude before the reading was revised by the BMKG, occurred at 4:49 p.m. local time. It was felt in several regions of West Java and Central Java.

The earthquake was felt strongly in Garut, where the MMI intensity scale was recorded at level IV. Its tremors were also felt in Kopo, Kalapanunggal, Sumur, Ciamis, and Tasikmalaya regions at MMI intensity scale III.

Residents in Sumedang, Lembang, Pamoyanan, Panimbang, Cikeusik, Labuan, Purworejo, Bantul, and Kulonprogo regions also felt the earthquake at a lower intensity.
