Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairperson of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri stated that threats of poverty had a greater deterrence effect on corruption suspects than prison sentences.

Taking into account the inclination, the KPK head said that anti-corruption strategies will be intensified beyond physical punishment to have a greater deterrence effect on corruption suspects.

"Beyond that, we must consider how to have a greater deterrence effect to discourage people from corruption. Hence, the KPK approach, apart from physical punishment, also includes fines and restitution, including for money laundering crimes," he explained.

The agency head pointed out that as the corruption eradication mission is not a simple task, three strategies should be applied in concurrence to ensure effectiveness.

"We must continue working hard in our corruption eradication efforts through community education, prevention, and prosecution strategies," Bahuri remarked.
