Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Information Ministry has informed that the analogue switch-off (ASO) or the termination of analogue broadcasts in East Java Broadcasting Area 1 will take place on December 20, 2022.

"The Communication and Information Ministry welcomes the agreement of broadcasters to stop analogue broadcasts (in the broadcasting area) on December 20, 2022, at 00.00 a.m. local time," director general of public information and communication at the ministry, Usman Kansong, told ANTARA on Friday.

The East Java Broadcasting Area 1 covers 10 regions, namely Surabaya city, Mojokerto city, Pasuruan city, Bangkalan district, Gresik district, Lamongan district, Jombang district, Mojokerto district, Sidoarjo district, and Pasuruan district.

Hence, the ministry has asked residents living in those regions to install a set-top box (STB) device on their analogue television to receive digital terrestrial television broadcasts.

"The Communication and Information Ministry encourages people in East Java (broadcasting area) 1 who are still using analogue televisions to equip them with STBs from now on; thus, by the time of ASO (implementation) on December 20, 2022, they will be ready to enjoy digital television broadcasts with clean pictures, clear sound, and sophisticated technology," the director general said.

According to the latest data from the ministry, the distribution of STB assistance for underprivileged households in East Java Broadcasting Area 1 has reached 100 percent.

Furthermore, the ministry welcomed the commitment of the Electronics Business Player Association (Gabel) to ensuring the availability of STB devices in the market at affordable prices, Kansong said.

Earlier, the ASO was implemented in the Greater Jakarta area on November 2.

In addition, it has been carried out in a number of broadcasting areas in West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and the Riau Islands since December 2.

Currently, 580 out of the 696 television stations across Indonesia are making simulcasts — or conducting analogue and digital broadcasts simultaneously.
