Jakarta (ANTARA) - Acting governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono is planning to increase the number of railway lines at Tanah Abang Station from four to six by the end of 2023 to anticipate a boom in passenger numbers.

"With the six railway lines, we can anticipate the increase in the number of passengers (by) up to 300 thousand per day in the following years," Hartono said at Tanah Abang Station here on Monday.

According to him, the number of passengers served by Tanah Abang Station is expected to increase on the back of rising business activities and mobility of residents in Jakarta and surrounding regions.

For this reason, the Transportation Ministry, the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, and the Jakarta provincial government will build additional facilities to accommodate the surge in passengers. Currently, he said, Tanah Abang Station can serve up to 100 thousand passengers per day.

The Jakarta provincial government will also develop transit-oriented facilities and refurbish existing infrastructure around the station, such as by widening road access.

"We need to build a U-turn, a pedestrian bridge, refurbish the park, and prepare some areas for the entry and exit of passengers," he said.

However, he did not provide details on the budget that will be prepared by the provincial government to support the new facilities at Tanah Abang Station or the budget that will be allocated by the central government to support the mobility of train passengers.

The planned construction of new facilities at Tanah Abang Station will begin in early 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Central Jakarta Mayor Dhany Sukma said that his administration will follow up on the acting governor's directive to improve facilities at Tanah Abang Station.

“We, as a local government, support the central government's strategic programs," Sukma added.
