We will serve every resident who comes and needs (drinking) water for the next three months, including for the need for clean water.
Cianjur, West Java (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has launched a free ready-to-drink water service, which can provide up to 10 thousand liters of water per day, to meet the needs of Cianjur earthquake survivors.

The water treatment equipment at PMI's WASH camp has been running since four days ago, PMI’s coordinator for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) Nanang Kurnia said here on Wednesday.

“We have distributed around 1,500 liters of ready-to-drink water in gallons for residents. For supply, we are still having difficulties because we are still waiting for transportation equipment to reach evacuation posts that need it,” he informed.

Kurnia said that to get the water, residents need to submit a request to PMI’s integrated post on Pangeran Hidayatullah street, Sawahgede village, Cianjur. The water will then be delivered to them by volunteers.

Residents can also directly visit the water treatment site at Tias water park, Rancagoong village, Cilaku sub-district, Cianjur district, to get water by bringing their own containers.

He stressed that the ready-to-drink water is being provided for free because PMI’s services have a humanitarian, not commercial goal.

“We will serve every resident who comes and needs (drinking) water for the next three months, including for the need for clean water,” he said.

He noted that in the 36 days following the Cianjur quake, PMI has distributed nearly 4 million liters of water to meet the needs of people at 254 evacuation posts and neighborhoods who do not get water supply from the local tap water company (PDAM).

On November 21, 2022, an earthquake measuring 5.6 in magnitude, which was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, rattled Cianjur district, West Java, leaving hundreds dead and injured.

As of December 20, the death toll from the quake reached 635 after a SAR team found three bodies buried under landslide materials.

The earthquake caused serious damage to 25,186 houses, moderate damage to 12,496 houses, and minor damage to 20,367 houses.

According to government data, at least 525 school buildings were severely damaged in the quake, along with 269 places of worship, 14 healthcare facilities, and 17 office buildings.
