"The challenge for law enforcement in the future must prioritize professionalism, accountability, and progressivity," he said here on Wednesday.
He said the challenge arose because 2023 was a political year ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
Moreover, in 2022, there were still several legal issues, especially within the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the Supreme Court (MA), he said.
Thus, he called for 2023 to be a year of improvement in law enforcement, and to this end, enforcing the law in future is deemed necessary to prioritize accountability, integrity, progressivity, and professionalism.
"That is what needs to be developed in law enforcement in Indonesia in 2023," the professor noted.
To this end, Nugroho said that challenges in law enforcement in 2023 will be tougher than those in 2022 since apart from being a political year, 2023 is also a year of evaluation of previous performance in line with several internal problems within the police and the Supreme Court.
"That is part of the improvement in 2023. Hence, the challenges are, both internal challenges and evaluations, as well as internal challenges related to the political year as well as the increasingly high dynamics of society," he said.
He acknowledged that in 2022, several achievements were recorded in law enforcement in Indonesia.
However, such achievements seem to have been forgotten by the public along with the several "deviating" legal issues within law enforcement institutions.
He said one aspect that people really look for is law enforcement objectively and to provide more justice for the community.
"This means that law enforcement's response must be faster than before," he added.
