The concept (of the stadium) is multifunctional, thus it can be used for hosting both concerts and sporting events.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry expects the development of the Indoor Multifunction Stadium (IMS), located in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Sports Complex, Jakarta, to be completed by June 2023.
PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono noted in a statement received on Wednesday that establishment of the basketball venue was aimed at bolstering the national athletes’ achievements in various international tournaments.
"At the latest (31st) SEA Games (in 2022), (our national) basketball teams won the medals. Still, after the inauguration of this stadium (IMS), the achievements must be further improved,” he remarked.
At the Games, the Indonesian women’s basketball team snatched the silver medal, while the men’s basketball team bagged the gold medal.
The IMS, whose construction is carried out by the Directorate General of Human Settlements of the PUPR Ministry using the state budget (APBN), also aims to support the implementation of the FIBA World Cup that will be held from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
Currently, the progress in construction has reached 74 percent.
Hence, the minister has encouraged all parties to optimize utilization of the new stadium for the advancement of achievements of national athletes.
"The concept (of the stadium) is multifunctional. Thus, it can be used for hosting both concerts and sporting events. It uses telescopic grandstand technology,” he noted.
Hadimuljono stated that the venue is strategically located in the downtown, with dense greenery and a large parking area.
“Thus, please pay attention to the maintenance (of the stadium),” he added.
Spokesperson of the PUPR Ministry Endra S. Atmawidjaja stated that in the near future, the last construction structure will be installed on the 5th floor of the IMS.
"The topping-off ceremony will be attended by President Jokowi (Joko Widodo). We are still waiting for the detailed schedule. The ceremony will mark the end of construction activities, which will be followed by the finishing phase that will be completed in June 2023," he stated.
The IMS is located in the Block 10 of the GBK Sports Complex. The new stadium is being built on a land spanning 30,270 square meters (m2) owned by the State Secretariat Ministry.
Meanwhile, the total area of the building is 50,398 m2, with a capacity of 16,523 spectators.
