Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia, as one of the hosts of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, will hold a trial competition in July 2023, ahead of the basketball championship, by inviting teams from neighboring countries.

"In preparing for the main event, when the stadium is completed and ready to use, the committee plans to hold a test event," chairperson of the FIBA 2023 World Cup-Indonesian committee Budisatrio Djiwandono said here on Tuesday.

The trial event would be aimed at ensuring the readiness of various elements, such as administration, transportation, accommodation, and the competition arena, for the FIBA World Cup, he added.

"The goal is to test our readiness in terms of committeeship, while we can prepare immigration, airport pick-up, and logistics flow, too," Djiwandono explained.

The FIBA World Cup will be held from August 25 to September 10, 2023, in three Asian countries, namely the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.

Since April 2021, the Indonesian government has been building the Indoor Multifunction Stadium (IMS) with a capacity of 16,250 spectators in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex. The multifunction stadium is targeted for completion by June 2023.

The FIBA World Cup 2023 committee has been formed and has been working since seven months ago.

However, Djiwandono explained that there are still several stages that need to be worked on such as the alignment of regulations by the government, cross-ministerial coordination to prepare for competitions out of the field, and FIBA's supervision of the arena facilities’ construction.

He assured that the Indonesian committee has relevant experience because it participated in the 2018 Asian Games and the FIBA Asia Cup 2022.Meanwhile, Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, expressed his appreciation for the work that has been done by the committee’s team and the Indonesian Basketball Federation (Perbasi) and hoped that the world cup would run smoothly.
