Jakarta (ANTARA) - At least 56 items of content on digital platforms have been blocked over the exploitation of vulnerable groups, informatics application director general at the Communication and Information Ministry Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said here on Monday.

The ministry will not tolerate digital content that exploits vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and people with disabilities, he added.

People can showcase their creativity on digital platforms through different content, but there should be restrictions that must be adhered to, including not exploiting vulnerable groups, he said.

The ministry has continued to provide digital literacy to the public through the Digital Literacy National Movement. With people becoming more literate, it expects the quality of content on digital platforms to improve.

Recently, at the ministry’s request, TikTok removed a video involving begging, which was uploaded by a creator from West Nusa Tenggara.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission also urged television stations to not broadcast the video or invite its creator as a guest star.

West Nusa Tenggara Police are reportedly investigating the person who was shown mud bathing to beg for money in the video and the creator of the video.

Social Minister Tri Rismaharini has issued Circulation Letter No. 2 of 2023 on Policing Exploitative Activities and/or Begging Activities that Utilize Elderly Population, Children, People with Disabilities and/or Other Vulnerable Groups.

The letter has been addressed to regional governments and seeks to ban the exploitation of the elderly and was issued in response to content involving begging circulating on social media.

The circulation letter has urged governors and district heads or mayors to prevent begging activities offline and online on social media that exploit vulnerable groups.
