Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan has stressed the importance of people obtaining knowledge about commodity futures trading so that they understand its risks as well as benefits.

"(So that) everything — whatever that is, including the benefits — they understand well. If you do not understand, don't be like me a long time ago, expecting huge profits every month. In reality, every business, whatever it is, has its own risk," the minister said at the opening of “2023 Commodity Futures Trading Literacy Month” here on Tuesday.

Prospective and current clients must properly understand the business they are engaging in —from the risk, place, and history of the commodity they are investing in, he added.

The “2023 Commodity Futures Trading Literacy Month” seeks to remind people that commodity trade offers opportunities for profit and also comes with the risk of loss, he said.

According to acting head of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, Didid Noordiatmoko, commodity futures trading is considered appealing by some people who want instant profits.

This is not always the case; hence, many clients fall for illegal investments, he said. One infamous example of this were the trading robots that were rampant in 2022.

"This is owing to the limited comprehension of commodity futures trading. Moreover, there are still business players who do not follow (the rules) since there are still some loopholes in the current regulation," Noordiatmoko noted.

Throughout 2022, the agency recorded reports of commodity futures trading, whose figure was higher compared to 2021.

There were two types of complaints, those involving illegal investments and others involving brokers who were not aware of the system of commodity futures trading, he informed.

"Investment, wherever it is, none of them have consistent profit," he highlighted.

Noordiatmoko reminded people that in every investment, there is a chance for profit as well as loss.
