Jakarta (ANTARA) - Support from the public will determine the process and speed of deliberations on the domestic workers' protection (PPRT) bill, chairperson of the National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) Andy Yentriyani has said.

"The support from the public becomes the determiner, (such as for) the deliberations, the speed, and the scope of the rules to be regulated," she informed at a press conference entitled “Move Together Asking the House of Representatives (DPR) to Send a Letter to the President regarding Presidential Letter,” which was followed online from here on Monday.

She asked the government and the DPR to involve people with many followers on social media to promote and monitor the PPRT bill.

According to her, the birth of a law that protects domestic workers is an affirmation of the state's recognition of women's contributions in life.

She further said that domestic work, which is often considered to be women's work, actually does not only contribute to the family economy of domestic workers, but also contributes to the family, country, and the community where they work.

"The family, state, and community institutions will not be able to run without the implementation of those functions, including what is done through domestic work," she stressed.

In addition, ahead of the 25th anniversary of the reformation, Indonesia has promised to provide better protection to all its people without discrimination, as guaranteed by the Constitution, she highlighted.

"To this end, providing protection to informal workers, most of whom are women, in jobs that have never been appreciated before is crucial," she emphasized.

On Tuesday (March 21, 2023), the DPR approved the PPRT bill as an initiative bill during the House’s 19th plenary meeting of session period IV of the 2022–2023 session year.
