“We agree to revise several parts of KPU Regulation No. 10 of 2023 on House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Legislatures (DPRD) candidates, primarily on the calculation of the 30-percent minimum (number of) women candidates in every electoral constituency,” KPU Chairperson Hasyim Asy’ari stated in a press conference at the KPU Office here, Wednesday.
The decision was taken following a tripartite meeting involving the KPU, General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and Election Organizers' Honorary Council (DKPP) here on Tuesday (May 9) evening.
The earlier regulation on calculating the 30-percent women's representation criteria -- stipulating that the number will be rounded down if two digits after the decimal point in the calculation are less than 50 -- has drawn criticism from members of the public for potentially reducing women's representation in the election.
The rule revision, as agreed by electoral organizers, will round the number up to the higher-value integer if calculation results yield a fractional value, regardless of whether the fractional value reaches 50 or not.
Following the calculation adjustment, the KPU will insert an addendum on the revision stipulating political parties, who have submitted the names of their legislative candidates earlier, to revise their candidate list according to the newest regulation before the deadline on May 14.
The tripartite meeting took place after Bawaslu, on Monday (May 8), received representatives of a public coalition, who opposed the KPU regulation on the women's representation calculation.
They urged the agency to appeal to the KPU to revise the law within 48 hours or the coalition will contest the regulation with the Supreme Court.
