Jakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has urged ministries and institutions to use their budgets in creative and innovative ways to ensure good value for money and benefit the economy.

She believes that such expenditures are crucial as they can generate more jobs and lead to better utilization of the budget.

"I think creative and innovative spending is not done often in our bureaucracy," the minister observed at the National Coordination Meeting on 2023 Budgeting, which was accessed here on Wednesday.

She suggested that one example of such an initiative could be managing the government's budget in a way that generates a bigger turnover, which would have a significant impact.

Budget turnover is a function of the state budget that allows the government to allocate, distribute, or stabilize funds during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, she explained.

Furthermore, she emphasized the need for institutions to adopt creative and innovative spending approaches, as the private sector has yet to venture into certain high-risk aspects.

"So maybe the government needs to take the lead and push for the economy, and then we can give the private sector a chance to engage," he said.

Implementing such an approach would require participation from all institutions, including regional governments if necessary, the minister added.

The state treasurer expressed gratitude to ministries, agencies, and regional governments that have committed to pursuing an innovative and creative approach to budget management.

"This could be something that can be maintained as an indicator of expenditure quality," concluded Indrawati.
