Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Informatics Ministry has said that it is clarifying the details of a cyberattack experienced by state-owned Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) some time ago.

The clarification has been pursued following the ministry receiving a report concerning allegations of a data leak during the cyberattack, the ministry's Application and Informatics Director General Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said here on Monday.

If a gap is found in BSI's system and the data leak is confirmed, the ministry will provide recommendations to fix the system so that similar incidents do not recur, he added.

Moreover, the ministry's involvement in handling the cyberattack against BSI is a part of the transition toward the implementation of Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection (PDP), which will become fully applicable in 2024.

"This is still transition, thus it (the law) will only fully apply, including its penalties, in 2024. Meanwhile, the ministry is still the one handling this report (related to the data leak),” Pangerapan said.

During the transition period, the ministry will still be responsible for handling cyberattack cases related to data leaks, he informed.

However, after 2024, a special institution will be appointed to enforce the law in similar cases.

"If the cases occur in 2024, there will certainly be a penalty because there are already PP (government regulation) and there will be a new institution to handle them. The ministry's job will be over," he said.

Earlier, on May 11, 2023, BSI informed that the bank faced access-related issues due to an alleged cyberattack. The bankers started to experience the issues on May 8.

BSI said it has coordinated with other stakeholders, such as the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Bank Indonesia (BI) and National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), for investigating the cyberattack.

BSI is ensuring that its services continue to prioritize the interests of its customers, including in relation to data protection and the consumers' funds.
