Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has continued to remove pornographic content from cyberspace so that people can utilize digital spaces optimally,a top government official said.

Until now, Kominfo has handled and blocked public access to 1.2 million websites with pornographic content, Director General of Applications and Informatics at the ministry Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said here Monday.

"If (the content) is searched via Google, it actually can't be done if accessed from Indonesia because we have worked together on the search engine," he informed.

He further said the ministry has coordinated with social media companies operating in Indonesia to tackle pornographic content.

He said that the community policies of social media platforms bar pornographic content.

He assured that all efforts have been made to check the spread of pornographic content in public spaces.

Pangerapan also provided examples, such as Twitter. He said Twitter is a social media platform that is often used to spread negative content.

However, one million pornographic content pieces have been removed from the social media platform.

However, Pangerapan said handling pornographic content in the private sphere is still posing a challenge.

"The problem is currently in private conversations. Those who send from one cellphone to another and those who use VPN. This is a private conversation. Therefore, we need to find other solutions together," he said.

In terms of regulations, he informed that he will propose topics related to the protection of vulnerable groups exploited by pornography, including children.

He said that this could be discussed during the revision of the Electronic Information and Transaction Law (UU ITE), which is currently in the process of being deliberated with the House of Representatives.

"In the revision of the ITE Law, I would like to propose the topic of online protection for children. I think it can be discussed between the House and the government," he added.
