"Everyone conducting activities and visiting IKN should change their mindset," OIKN Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources Myrna A. Safitri noted in a release on Monday.
"Namely, they should, as much as possible, reduce waste production and encourage recycling," she remarked.
The issue of waste is not just a matter of policy and technology but also lifestyle that should be changed for the better. Thus, it has to start from the level of individuals, families, the office environment, and society.
To handle waste, the OIKN is preparing to formulate several policies, such as the Chief Regulation Draft on Waste Management, Household Waste Management Guideline and Household Waste.
"There are also the Waste Bank Guideline and Construction Waste Management Guideline. In addition to the policies, dissemination (of information) on minimal waste lifestyle in IKN is also undertaken, especially at construction sites," Safitri stated.

In connection with plastic waste at sea and along shorelines, its handling came under the sea pollution control plan, specifically in Balikpapan Bay.
The course of the main policies related to waste comprise managing waste from its sources, so sorting waste became important.
"Waste disposal at the landfill model will be discarded," she stated.
"Construction of TPST (integrated waste processing site) is undertaken this year, so waste recycling and businesses related to recycling became a priority to be developed in IKN," she affirmed.
Moreover, in January 2023, the OIKN Head Circular Letter was issued to not only address the issue of waste but also to handle environmental destruction and pollution during the construction phase.
"This circular letter demands construction project managers to comply with all environmental obligations and prioritize prevention and carefulness," she explained.
