"A hydrological disaster is not only about floods but also droughts," Hadimuljono noted in his statement here on Wednesday.
The minister believes that with applied innovation, the science of hydrology will determine success in managing natural resources as a whole. He considered hydrology to be very decisive in life.
"Hydrology is a basic science," he further noted.
He emphasized that hydrology is a fundamental key required to solve problems related to water resources in terms of prediction and estimation, so that it can minimize losses caused by hydrometeorological disasters.
Hadimuljono also said hydrology and applied hydrology have crucial role to play in solving issues and providing solutions and innovations in dealing with water resources-related problems.
The PUPR Ministry continues to encourage the involvement of academics and experts, especially members of the Indonesian Hydrological Society (MHI), to utilize innovation and technology in mitigating and anticipating hydrometeorological disasters.
He stated that the role of professional organizations is direly needed in supporting the continuity of professionalism in the Indonesian water sector.
Hadimuljono also commended the MHI, which until now, has continued to preserve the science of hydrology.
The minister said that hydrological science is also the key in managing water resources more effectively and sustainably, both on a local and regional scale and also the world.
Meanwhile, General Chairperson of MHI, who is concurrently Head of the Regional Infrastructure Development Agency (BPIW) of the ministry Yudha Mediawan, said MHI is a professional organization formed on May 7, 1998, with the aim of improving the quality of expertise and responsibilities of Indonesian hydrologists.
"MHI is obliged to build scientific cooperation with hydrologists, through scientific seminars to develop and utilize science and technology as well as hydrology in solving various water-related problems," Mediawan stated.
