Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga has stated that digital literacy skills can protect women and children from the dangers of social media.
“A woman who has digital literacy can protect herself in cyberspace in the future, as well as their children in browsing cyberspace in social media," Minister Puspayoga said at the launch of Women and Children's Channel in RRI Play Go, here on Wednesday.
She highlighted the rampant case of online-based gender violence. The minister also pointed to the gap in information access which hinders women and children.
In response to the phenomenon, the ministry encourages women to tap into the potential of digital technology, as well as educating and protecting themselves from the dangers which cyberspace could pose, she said.
One of the ministry's efforts includes establishing the Women and Children's Friendly Smart Home, which adopts the concepts of high tech and high technology, Puspayoga said.
The ministry also collaborates with National Radio (RRI) to spread information on empowerment issues in cyberspace by creating a special channel in the RRI Play Go app, she added.
She also said that the channel discussed health and the development of women and children in order to improve their mental and physical healths. The measure is necessary to allow women to participate in relevant communities, seek help from mass organizations, and exchange ideas in discussion forums, Minister Puspayoga explained.
"Synergy and support from everyone are they keys to address the digital gender gap and establish protection over women and children's rights," the minister stressed.
She opined that the collaborative effort can compel women to contribute in the digital transformation, while also combating the rampant hoaxes that often mislead women and children.
The minister commended RRI for their willingness to collaborate with the ministry to pursue empowerment and protect people through entertaining educational contents.
"Hopefully, in the future, this becomes our commitment to implement a small step, with utmost (dedication) in a consistent manner. This will be one of our efforts to empower women, protect children, and advance Indonesia," she added.
