Jakarta (ANTARA) - House Speaker Puan Maharani, on the occasion of the 77th Anniversary of the National Police (Polri), encouraged the institution to be more professional and continue to serve the people in the best way possible.

"I wish all members of the National Police a happy 77th anniversary in 2023," Maharani stated here on Saturday, as broadcast from the commemoration event at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Her virtual speech was also aired on Polri TV, the National Police's television station.

In its 77 years, Maharani expects the police to continue to carry out its main duties professionally.

The House speaker emphasized the need for the police to maintain public security and order, enforce the law, and protect and serve the community.

"(The police must) improve discipline and professionalism in serving the public and maintaining security," she remarked.

She urged the police to anticipate various challenges, especially in facing the political year of 2023 and the 2024 general elections.

"With its professionalism, I believe the Polri can make the political year safe, so that the 2024 elections can take place safely, peacefully, and joyfully," she remarked.

On Bhayangkara Day, she called on the police to evaluate its performance.

"The Polri must improve internal supervision in order to provide maximal services to the people," she stated.

Maharani called on the National Police to be strict and not selective in handling legal cases, including cases involving its own members.

"This requires commitment from the police internally. We believe that with high credibility and transparency in every case investigation, the public's trust that had dropped due to some internal cases can increase again," the House speaker affirmed.

Furthermore, she urged the police to be prudent in dealing with cases involving ordinary people.

"The House hopes that the National Police will prioritize humanitarian values in dealing with legal cases involving ordinary people, who really need protection from law enforcement," she affirmed.

According to Maharani, the police need to prioritize restorative justice in cases of minor crimes involving small communities and vulnerable persons, as has been stated by National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
