Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry pursues collaboration with regional governments in the Technical Meeting for Climate Change Control in Maluku and Papua Region on July 4-5 in order to strengthen initiatives in climate action.

"This event is expected to improve collaboration among the government, people, scholars, and private sector in implementing climate action at the basic level, particularly in Maluku and Papua area," Director General for Climate Change Control at the ministry Laksmi Dhewanthi noted in Ambon on Tuesday.

Dhewanthi affirmed that the collaborative efforts align with Presidential Regulation Number 98 of 2021 on carbon economic value to achieve Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and control greenhouse gas emissions for national development, in which the regional government has a role in achieving the NDC by formulating measures to adapt and mitigate climate change.

The NDC targets require contribution from several sectors, including ministries, agencies, and regional governmental organizations at the provincial and municipal scopes, she pointed out.

Regional governments have a significant role to play in greenhouse gas reduction and improving climate resilience, she affirmed.

"Regional governments have an important role in the efforts to achieve NDC targets by pursuing (efforts) to adapt and mitigate climate change through formulation of action plan, pushing for action at the regional scope, as well as monitoring and evaluation as part of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions," Dhewanthi elaborated.

The technical meeting, hosted in Ambon, Maluku, also serves as a platform to learn about the progress in climate change mitigation actions in Maluku and Papua, she remarked.

It is expected that the event could push for better collaboration among stakeholders, thereby achieving the very basic of mitigation and adaptation on climate change efforts, she noted.

"We very much appreciate the support and collaboration from everyone, particularly regional governments, and Maluku Province, in particular, for hosting the activity," she remarked.

Regional Secretary of Maluku Province Sadali Le stated that the province responded positively to the meeting, as it serves as collective commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia.

"Press' role is also necessary in spreading information that everyone have to take part in pursuing the national commitment," Le concluded.
