Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government opens opportunities for traditional goods and services to be registered as international brands or trademarks, Secretary General of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Andap Budhi Revianto stated.

"I received positive information from the Law and Human Rights Minister (Yasonna H. Laoly), who is attending the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) session in Geneva, Switzerland," Revianto told ANTARA here on Monday.

According to the information he received, Indonesia's accession to the Nice Agreement on the international classification of goods and services supports national traditional products to become international brands.

The Nice Agreement established the Nice Classification of Goods and Services for the purposes of registering trademarks and service marks.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Government has the accession to be bound to this international agreement, thereby facilitating the registration of traditional Indonesian brands at international-level trademarks.

Laoly met with Director General of WIPO Daren Tang at the WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Friday (July 7).

"While in Geneva, the minister had the opportunity to meet WIPO Director-General Daren Tang at his office on Friday. During the bilateral meeting, he handed over the accession instrument to the Nice Agreement," he stated.

Through the Nice Agreement, Revianto said Indonesia can include a list of goods and services that are typical of the country, such as herbs, gentong (concrete pot), batik, and other traditional products, into the list of goods and services regulated in the Nice Classification.

Indonesia's accession to the Nice Agreement will encourage the global promotion of traditional Indonesian trademarks as well as facilitate the determination of the class of goods in trademark registration nationally and internationally through the Madrid Protocol that Indonesia has also acceded to.

"With this accession, Indonesia will improve the national trademark system to meet international standards in trademark registration," he affirmed.
