Jakarta (ANTARA) - The process of forming a Directorate of Women and Child Protection and Human Trafficking Crime (PPA PPO directorate) is currently on at the State Apparatus Utilization and Bureaucratic Reform Ministry, the National Police (Polri) has informed.

"On June 2023, the President has given directive for institutional improvement to the unit that handles women and children as well as human trafficking cases by forming a Directorate of Women and Child Protection and Human Trafficking Crime," Director of General Crimes at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department, Brigadier General Djuhandhani Rahardjo Puro, said.

Puro said here on Monday that since 2022, the police have suggested a structural change so as to transform the Women and Child Protection unit into a directorate.

The formation of the new directorate requires many preparations covering aspects ranging from organizational structure, administrative aspects at various levels of National Police, as well as personnel, and budgeting, to facilities, he informed.

The change in structure has been commenced in order to provide the best public services, particularly to women and children who fall victim to crimes, Puro added.

He highlighted that the number of Women and Children Services Units across Indonesia is currently pegged at 528, and they employ 3,249 personnel with the skills and competency necessary to handle such cases.

Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga earlier said that she supports the creation of the special directorate since it will serve to improve the management of cases of violence against women and children in terms of quality and quantity.

"As for the National Police, although currently, the system of collaboration among all services providers units is already good, there is still a need to improve the National Police's organization in Women and Children Protection Unit in order to ensure that there are no victims that do not get services as per their need," she added.
