If (anyone) commits similar crimes as the defendant has done, they may face similar legal consequences
Pandeglang, Banten (ANTARA) - Banten's Pandeglang District Court found a revenge porn defendant guilty and sentenced him to six years' imprisonment and fined him Rp1-billion (US$66.3 thousand) in addition to eight years of internet ban as an additional sentence.

The court spokesperson, Panji Answinartha, highlighted the eight-year internet ban imposed against defendant Alwi Husen Maolana as a legal breakthrough.

"(It is) because our Electronic and Transaction Law (UU ITE) does not specifically regulate that kind of additional sentence," Answinartha stated on Thursday.

The internet ban sentencing in the form of deprivation of certain rights permitted by the law will restrict the defendant from using any internet-based communication device throughout the ban period.

"The additional sentence of deprivation of rights imposed by the judge is even outside the types of deprivation of rights regulated by the Criminal Code," he affirmed.

He also pointed out that the judge instructed the destruction of all electronic and information data related to the case, such as flash disks, printouts, and electronic files, despite not being demanded by the prosecutor.

The spokesperson stated that the hefty sentence, including the internet ban, against the defendant is intended to serve as a deterrent to prevent others from committing similar crimes.

"If (anyone) commits similar crimes as the defendant has done, they may face similar legal consequences," Answinartha emphasized.

The judge panel's decision reflected the court's commitment to addressing the issue of revenge porn and dissemination of pornographic videos that surged in the digital era, he stressed.

Revenge porn, as a form of sexual abuse, violates the victim's privacy and dignity and can cause severe psychological effects on them.

The sentence against the defendant is also expected to be a warning for residents to not share social media content that violates the law and to respect the privacy of others, he remarked.
