Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is striving to strengthen Indonesia's research ecosystem to make superior innovations that can help the country boost its economic growth.

"Creative economy is an economy based on research," BRIN head Laksana Tri Handoko said during a press conference on the 28th National Technological Awakening Day in Jakarta on Thursday.

Indonesia is currently struggling to get out of the middle-income trap, he noted adding that the country needs to achieve an economic growth rate of seven percent to break free from the trap and transform into a developed state.

He said he believes that this growth can be achieved only if Indonesia manages to enhance the quality of its science and research, which, in turn, will help the country derive higher added value from its products.

"Economy based on science and technology is the only thing that can save Indonesia from the middle-income trap and lead it to become a developed country in 2045," he pointed out.

To make the nation advanced and highly competitive, he said, the government is paying special attention to devising, implementing, and strengthening programs aimed at producing human resources that are superior in terms of the capability of conducting research and making innovations.

Furthermore, he informed that BRIN has formulated nine schemes for its researcher mobility program, including a post-doctoral scheme, an initiative for guest researchers, and for the recruitment of state researchers holding doctoral degrees.

BRIN is currently accepting applications for the schemes and making selections based on applicants' competency. Those interested in enrolling in the program can view the required qualifications and information on the website http://manajementalenta.brin.go.id.

According to Handoko, the program constitutes the government's effort to provide a medium to Indonesia's superior talents, where they can hone their competencies and pursue a career according to their passion.

The success of the program, he said, is paramount for producing future superior research and innovation talents, in tandem with efforts to improve human resource quality, build essential infrastructures, and secure adequate budgets.

"We are giving opportunities to everyone, especially final year students, to participate in research activities in the hopes of developing their capacity and competency," he added.
