We are striving to provide legitimacy that Reog Ponorogo deserves to be designated as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCOJakarta (ANTARA) - The government will hold the Reog Ponorogo Cultural Parade in Jakarta on Sunday (August 27) in an effort to push for its UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage.
"We are striving to provide legitimacy that Reog Ponorogo deserves to be designated as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, while it has been one at the national level for a long time," Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK), Muhadjir Effendy, said here on Thursday.
The cultural parade will also be held to enliven the Indonesian Independence month.
Reog Ponorogo is a traditional dance originated from Ponorogo, East Java.
The cultural parade has been initiated by several ministries and agencies, including the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, the Ponorogo district government, the Jakarta provincial government, the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), and the National Library.
The parade will start from the National Library building, then proceed to the front of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's office, the National Museum, and end at the Coordinating Ministry of PMK's building.
The parade will cover a distance of about 1.5 km and will halt at several points to display various cultural arts attractions.
In addition to Reog Ponorogo, other performing arts such as the Balinese Barong Dance, the Palang Pintu tradition, a musical instrument assemble angklung, the Saman Dance, and martial arts pencak silat, will also be featured at the parade.
It will also include an exhibition of micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) products.
The Reog Ponorogo Cultural Parade is part of the National Mental Revolution Movement (GNRM) Program, Effendy said.
The GNRM Program aims to increase young people's appreciation of art, creativity, cultural works, and cultural heritage.
"The values in the Reog Ponorogo performance align with the GNRM Program, namely work ethic, gotong royong (mutual cooperation), and integrity," the minister said.
