Jakarta will be given a number of special authorities to solve various complex problems.Shanghai, China (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will form a regional council to manage the Special Region of Jakarta (DKJ) after the national capital shifts to IKN Nusantara in East Kalimantan, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin informed in Shanghai on Tuesday.
"This regional council will include Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi (Jabodetabek), and also Cianjur," he said.
At a previous meeting to discuss the DKJ Bill, which was attended by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Amin on September 12, 2023, it was decided that the name of DKI Jakarta will be changed to DKJ after the national capital relocation.
The name change has been stipulated in Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the National Capital City (IKN). As per the law, the status of Jakarta will also change from Special Capital Region (DKI) to Special Jakarta Region (DKJ).
The Vice President said that the regional council will work to harmonize planning from Jabodetabek to Cianjur in accordance with the DKJ Bill.
"The plan and the preparation to relocate the capital city is underway. Jakarta will no longer be a DKI but DKJ," he added.
Due to its historical value as the capital city and its current potential, Jakarta needs to be designated as a special region on sociological and historical grounds, he explained.
"Jakarta will be given a number of special authorities to solve various complex problems. For example, the traffic jams, pollution, flooding, and also Jakarta as the largest economic city in the world," the Vice President said.
Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the National Capital City will replace Law Number 29 of 2007 concerning the Provincial Government of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta as the Capital of the Republic of Indonesia.
According to Amin, the DKJ Bill outlines the concept of the Special Region of Jakarta as a global city and the largest economic center in Indonesia. There are also many aspects of state finances that will need to be regulated by the bill.
The Legislative Body of the House of Representatives (DPR) agreed to include the bill in the 2023 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) priority during a plenary meeting on September 12.
In the future, Jakarta will be on par with other regions of Indonesia and implement Law Number 23 of 2014 concerning Regional Government. Jakarta residents will also need to reprint their electronic identity cards (e-KTPs) on account of the change in the city's name to DKJ.
