"At the meeting in Jakarta, Thursday (October 5, 2023), Indonesia hopes that the two countries can strengthen cooperation in countering terrorism, considering that the use of technology in terrorism is a challenge at the domestic, regional, and global levels," BNPT head, Police Commissioner General Rycko Amelza Dahniel, said, according to a written statement received from BNPT in Jakarta on Friday.
Meanwhile, BNPT deputy for international cooperation, Andhika Chrisnayudhanto, said that rapid technological developments have become an opening for terror organizations to carry out propaganda, recruitment, and radicalization.
"Lone actors (single actors) resulting from online radicalization have the potential to be a source of terrorism, a mode of funding terrorism, including various types of fintech," he added.
He said that the misuse of technology for terrorism is not only being witnessed in Indonesia. Overseas terror groups such as ISIS are using cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFT) to carry out funding, he pointed out.
"Not only that, they are also using drones (unmanned aircraft) to carry out their operations," he said.
Besides the misuse of technology, the second Counter-Terrorism Dialogue between Indonesia and Japan also discussed the current situation regarding terrorism in the Southeast Asian region and Afghanistan, as well as the strategies of each country in dealing with extremism and terrorism.
