Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma’ruf Amin highlighted the importance of mitigating landslides and floods through collaboration between the government and community in facing the rainy season at the end of this year.

“We must prepare disaster mitigation and anticipation,” he noted in a press statement after delivering a scientific speech at the Open Senate Session of the Nusantara Islamic University in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday, uploaded on the YouTube channel of the Vice President's Secretariat.

Amin noted that towards the end of the year, Indonesia is forecast to enter the rainy season from October to December 2023 after several regions in Indonesia recorded relatively high intensity of rainfall.

He further noted that based on previous experiences, high-intensity rainfall can potentially cause floods and landslides in several regions prone to those disasters.

“The community must be prepared. Especially those (whose areas) are usually hit by floods or landslides, they have to be prepared to anticipate all possibilities," he remarked.

The vice president also called on regional governments to make preparations, such as carrying out disaster literacy improvement and providing good and adequate drainage channels.

"Then, regional governments must also prepare for the problems of (drainage) channels, rivers, and embankments. Do not let embankments to break again. Then, there should be a warning to the community in areas that are often hit by landslides," he remarked.

He also ordered the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to continue to oversee the implementation of disaster mitigation and the readiness of officers in the field to face the rainy season.

“I urged the central government and the BNPB to map regions that are prone to floods and prone to landslides that are common to occur during the rainy season,” he remarked.
