Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Angela Tanoesoedibjo stated that some 107 million domestic tourist movements can be recorded during the 2023 Christmas and 2024 New Year holidays.

"These two occasions are peak periods that are important to us. In the tourism sector, they can bring 104-107 million people movements," she remarked when met in Jakarta on Friday.

However, her side still needs collaboration with all stakeholders to achieve the figure.

Data from the Transportation Ministry through the Transportation Policy Agency's (BKT's) survey showed that people movements during the 2023 Christmas and 2024 New Year holidays will potentially reach 107.63 million, or 39.83 percent of the nation's total population.

"The prediction for people's movements during last year's Christmas and New Year holidays was 44.17 million. This year, the number has jumped to 107.63 million. The increase is significant, above one hundred percent, or 143.65 percent," Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated.

Meanwhile, data from the same survey recorded that the main reason behind people travelling during the Christmas and New Year holidays is for holidaying at tourist locations, at 45.29 percent; followed by the homecoming holiday being the next factor for travelling, at 30.15 percent; and for celebrating Christmas and New Year in their hometowns, at 18.98 percent.

The choice of transportation modes used to travel is dominated by the use of private vehicles, namely cars, with 35.57 percent, or 39.97 million people, and motorbikes, with 17.92 percent, or 20.14 million people.

For public transportation, the movement is dominated by trains, with 13.16 percent, or 14.79 million people; planes, with 11.91 percent, or 13.38 million people; buses, with 10.94 percent, or 12.29 million people; ferries, with 6.04 percent, or 6.78 million people; and ships, at 3.44 percent, or 3.86 million people.
