"I invite all Indonesian people to work together to increase digital literacy and not easily believe in news, especially not to take part in spreading hoaxes or fake news," he said here on Thursday.
To make the 2024 elections a success, the General Elections Commission (KPU) has established the narrative of elections being a means for national integration.
Setiadi said that his ministry is supporting the narrative through the 2024 Peaceful General Elections campaign.
The campaign focuses on encouraging people to use their right to vote wisely and help keep the digital space healthy and conducive.
He noted that, in the context of elections, the high utilization of digital technology could bring new challenges, especially related to information disorder that involves misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.
He highlighted that 42 percent of people believe misinformation related to elections, which can cause polarization and negatively impact trust in democracy, election institutions, and the implementation of elections.
"We hope that we can face the elections with a spirit of national unity and togetherness because we believe in a united nation that can realize the progress of a country," he said.
The Kominfo Ministry is taking measures from upstream to downstream to curb the spread of disinformation in the digital space.
At the upstream level, the ministry is increasing people's digital literacy, especially through the National Digital Literacy Movement.
People are being encouraged to filter the information that they receive proactively and independently. For this effort, the ministry is working with communities, academics, and other government institutions.
Meanwhile, at the intermediate level, the ministry is carrying out fact-checking and validation of information containing hoaxes through content moderation and cutting off access to hoax content.
At the downstream level, the ministry is supporting law enforcement by law enforcement officials.
