Data from the ministry's webpage showed that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 6,815,576 as of Tuesday, an increase of 298 over the previous week.
Of the total number of patients, at least 6,647,428 were declared cured and 161,926, or the equivalent of 2.4 percent, succumbed to the disease.
According to the COVID-19 page of the World Health Organization (WHO), which provides comparative data on the global case trend, 772,138,818 confirmed cases and 6,985,964 deaths were recorded worldwide during the same period.
Meanwhile in Southeast Asia, the total COVID-19 case count reached 61,203,510, with 806,772 deaths.
Head of the ministry's communications and public services bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, confirmed that other countries in ASEAN such as Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines are also experiencing a spike in cases.
She then reminded the public to complete the COVID-19 vaccination considering the surge in infections, especially ahead of the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, when people's movement tends to be high.
"We highly recommend the public to immediately complete their COVID-19 vaccination, both primary and booster doses according to the provisions," she said.
The ministry has also issued a circular letter on Precautions against the Spike in COVID-19 for Foreign Travelers, especially those at risk of contracting COVID-19 due to interactions with people from other countries.
"Everyone who wishes to travel must have high immunity to avoid the disease transmission from and to other people during the trip until they return," she added.
On Monday (December 11, 2023), the DKI Jakarta Health Service reported two patient deaths from COVID-19. One was an 81-year-old woman with hypertension as comorbidity who had received the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The second was a 91-year-old woman with a history of stroke and heart failure who had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
